This Crazy Life

Let’s pretend for a moment that the mailman pulled into my drive a few weeks ago, knocked on my door, and handed me a “Special Delivery” box. Imagine that this was no ordinary parcel–it contained snapshots of the events of my near future. I might have opened it and seen pictures of the hard and painful events in my life and in the lives of my extended family, and I would have been tempted to reject it.

Mr. Mailman? Would you come back, please, and take this box away? It’s too hard. It doesn’t make sense.

I might have said, “No, thank you.”

“No” to the traffic accident,

“No” to the pile of time-consuming paperwork,

“No” to two scheduled ear surgeries,

“No” to the stomach “bug” that set up camp in my house,

and “No” to the respiratory virus on its coattails,

“No” to the sudden trip to the hospital with appendicitis,

“No” to the annoying loss of internet service,

“No” to the vexing mechanical issues,

“No” to the shared heartaches and the sudden tears.

I would have said “no” to the painful, the scary, and the just-plain irritating parts of life.

But I’m glad God is God, and I am not,

because if I hadn’t continued to unpack the special delivery box, I wouldn’t have discovered the box seemed to be bottomless, like the widow’s jar of olive oil.  Every snapshot of God’s grace would have another one beneath it. The more I looked, the more I found.

I would have missed out on the satisfying “Yes, thank you” to the unending examples of God’s loving kindness.

“Yes” to the sunshine and shadow of my life,

“Yes” to the answered prayers for my family,

2015-11-04 11.41.44

“Yes” to the completed harvest,

2015-11-04 11.45.19

“Yes” to the marvelous skills of medical professionals,

“Yes” to the opportunities to reflect,

“Yes” to glories underfoot and overhead,

“Yes” to my surprising, unbelievable, crazy life.

2015-11-04 12.58.42

I will say “Yes” to God and to the whole bittersweet box of my future. I’m glad I don’t know what my future holds.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.   Matthew 6:34   MSG

Hallelujah!
You who serve God, praise God!
Just to speak his name is praise!
Just to remember God is a blessing—
    now and tomorrow and always.
From east to west, from dawn to dusk,
keep lifting all your praises to God!

  1. Constance, I love this, and I SO identify with it.

If my career as a professor had not been wrecked, if my health had not been wrecked, etcetera…then several small souls would have met sad and fearful ends…

The Ridgeback Twins, Josie and Reebok; Labby the Labrador; Red the red heeler and bray, her weiner dog sidekick; Bella the Miracle Dog, pulled from a ditch with a broken back, and learning to walk again; Denali the Happy Husky; and PITunia JezeBULL, all muscle and emotion.

They had no chance, not here in this cruel place, but they’re safe and loved now.

It was worth the trade, all of it.

By the bye…I love your name! Constance makes me feel a calm, stable peaceful kind of feeling.

    • Thanks, Andrew! We may never see how our suffering fits into God’s larger picture, but it sounds like you’ve got one pretty good idea. How wonderful that you’ve saved so many canine friends!
I hope I live up to your ideals of my name. : )

  2. Sorry to hear you’ve had some difficult days, Connie! But God is faithful, isn’t He?! I’m glad the mailman does NOT deliver our future in a box…i can only handle a moment at a time 🙂

  3. Connie, hugs and prayers heading your way this morning. Sometimes life really does kick us in the gut, doesn’t it? I am thankful for His unending grace that gets us through one moment at a time, and your words here are reminder to keep looking for His beauty in every situation.

  4. I can think of a lot of things that I would be ever so tempted to say “no thank you” to; but like you, there is so much more to be grateful for. It seems that no matter the heartache that visits, the trials that come…God has an endless supply of Blessings for us just around the next corner…if we simply have Faith and don’t give up looking! Lifting you up in prayer…

  5. I’m so glad too that we can’t know the future. I just know who holds the future and that is enough. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I agree when you say “I will say “Yes” to God and to the whole bittersweet box of my future. I’m glad I don’t know what my future holds.
And i like the text you choose in Matthew. Thank’s for sharing your reflexions

  7. I’m sorry for what you’ve been enduring! Yet through it all, you’ve seen His goodness and it’s truly an inspiration to me. I have zero desire to know what the future holds. He knows I can only take my days minute by minute 🙂 Blessings to you!

  8. I love this, Constance. I, too, am glad God is God. If it were up to me, I’d mess things up big time. I’m sorry you had to go through difficulties, struggles, and heartaches. I’m glad you are still able to see those endless examples of God’s grace. I love the wording of The Message in that verse from Matthew 6.

    • Thanks for stopping by to read and to leave such a kind comment.
The Message paraphrase of the Matthew 6 verse is one I’m preaching to myself: pay attention to what God is doing now and don’t get worked up about what might happen. I guess we all need to hear that message : )

  9. Wonderful combination of the pictures, etc. Grabbed my attention and my heart! Thank you.

  10. “Yes to the sunshine and shadows” – yes, they really are inseparable. Thanks for linking!

  11. Thank you, Constance. I am encouraged by your post.

  12. What a beautiful post! It is so true. There are quite a few times where I have been known to say I would go through a particular hardship all over again for the good which came from it. So glad I stopped here today. Blessings!

  13. I love your post and the reminder that God can work for good and reveal his grace even in situations we’d never say yes to if we had the choice. I really like the verse from Matthew 6 in the Message translation- it’s a verse I’ve heard a lot but that puts it in a new and fresh way.

  14. Lovely, lovely, lovely. To imagine God’s grace ahead of us, knowing all is well is the greatest comfort! Visiting from #tellhisstory today, I liked the title of your post! Really enjoyed it!

So very true. We can’t understand why suffering comes our way – sometimes I think I would do anything at all to save my daughter from her chronic illness. But God is always with us, and we can learn so much from suffering that we wouldn’t from the times of plain sailing. This morning I was reflecting on John 9:3, the young man who is disabled “so that the works of God can be made manifest in him”. Having said all that, I do hope you are now entering into calmer waters!

    • Thank you, Christine. I think it’s particularly hard to watch our children suffer, as you’ve written about your daughter. The suffering does drive us to God, strengthens our relationship with Him, and ultimately transforms us. Thanks for the reminder about the young man in John 3.
I hope your shoulder is healing–prayers for your medical professionals to be wise in treating you and your daughter and thanks for the slow, steady progress you’ve experienced.

  16. Aren’t we so glad not to know our tomorrow’s. Not sure I would’ve woke up a few mornings! I’m at Jennifer’s today in spot #70

  17. Hi Constance – visiting from Coffee for your Heart! Thank you for the encouraging words!

    Blessings,
    Lynne

  18. Oh, my, Connie, it sounds like you and your family have been through a lot lately. Thankful that God is providing strength and JOY in all circumstances. Bless you,
